Adopt-a-Book Program

Building a Better Library Collection One Book at a Time

HOW CAN YOU HELP FILL THE LIBRARY SHELVES?

You Name It
The Adopt-a-Book program is a wonderful opportunity for you to share your interests with your
community. Your tax deductible contribution will be used to purchase library material in the format
and subject of your choice, when possible. Your name, or the name of someone you wish to honor,
will appear on the nameplate in the books or items you purchase.
You may also purchase a shelf or shelving section in the area you wish to support. You will be
recognized with a nameplate on the shelves.

Adopt-a-Book
How do you Adopt? Complete the attached form and return it with your contribution to any Bartow
County public library. When completing your form, please specify the library location where you want
to place your book.
You may Adopt movies, audio books, and other items circulated within the library system. Simply
select the desired format on the form. You may also specify the department and subject matter you
would like to adopt. If you choose to adopt fiction, please specify your preferred genre; otherwise we
will purchase according to collection needs.
You will be notified when your adopted book is ready for the library shelves and given the opportunity
to be the first to enjoy your contribution!

Adopt-a-Shelf
New facilities offer new naming opportunities. Instead of the traditional show of project support by
selling bricks, we are providing library supporters the opportunity to Adopt-a-Shelf or Shelving Section
in order to purchase a high quality collection of books for the new, empty shelves in our growing
facilities.
Each adoption provides a name plaque which will be inscribed and placed in the section of the library
stacks, or shelves, in the department and subject area you select on the attached adoption form. All
naming will occur when the new shelves are installed; adoptions after this will occur simultaneously.
Due to the higher number of books the picture book shelves can accommodate, adoption donations
are higher in this area.

Why does the library need more books?
● Library expansion projects in Cartersville and Euharlee will provide us with necessary shelving, but funds cannot be used for books.

● State standards recommend a minimum of 2 books per capita. Our library system holds approximately 1 book per capita.

● Ongoing cuts in state funding have resulted in a 13.5% reduction in money for purchasing books and other library material.

● Libraries stock more than books. We circulate audio-books, CDs, DVDs/ Videos, software,
periodicals, online databases, and more.

● Growing community with a projected county population of 103,000 by 2010.

● Growing number of library users. Over onethird of Bartow County residents hold active library cards.

● Inflation has increased the cost of library materials.
